Every once in a while I receive an email with the subject line, "Whoopie Today." Or sometimes it just says "Whoopie."
My heart starts beating fast...it is not often these emails show up! The body of the email offers but a few extra words, "Chocolate/Pumpkin Whoopie Today."
There was one occasion in which the email included more than a single sentence, and that was March 2010. It said, "Whoopie Pie today. Will not be able to make much longer due to hot weather. Must stop once humid." Can you believe I still have that saved in my inbox?
The emails come anonymously, and I couldn't help but wonder if it was from a mass generated email list. So I replied with a question and he/she wrote back, "as for the e-mail, there are about 7 of you on it. I do it one at a time. We're pretty old-fashioned and un up-to-date." It makes me feel quite special indeed.
These pies are from Columbine in Tribeca, also home to excellent soups and a crazy delicious smoked turkey and avocado sandwich. Chocolate whoopie pies are made all year (except when the weather is too hot). I wrote about my first contact with the truly excellent chocolate whoopies on Serious Eats earlier this summer. But the pumpkin whoopies have only appeared twice this year. Once about a month ago when I was out of town. And the second time...
...the Email arrived again this morning. Pumpkin Whoopie Today. I couldn't make it to the bakery, but Deep offered to pick up an extra and meet me uptown to devour the whoopie pies. And devour we did! Soft, moist, aggressively spiced with the fluffy marshmallow filling spilling over just one side. I would be happy eating the pumpkin part alone, so fresh, a tender, dreamy nutmeg and cinnamon-rich cake. Come at the right time and you may get one still warm from the oven. Now that is sublime. The pumpkin ones are slightly smaller than the chocolate pies. But that's for the better as I'm not the best with portion control!
