NYC: Lunch - Locanda Verde

After a hectic morning at work today, Phyllis and I decided to take a leisurely lunch break at Locanda Verde. Locanda Verde is just around the corner from my office and I find myself here (especially for morning pastries and coffee) quite often. It's both a blessing and a curse to have such a wonderful, though slightly overpriced, restaurant so conveniently located. Lemon-Rosemary Focaccia to begin.

They've made a few changes to the pasta menu recently (but my favourite, the Scampi Ravioli is still there, woohoo!), and today I went with the Trofie Pasta ($17). The trofie shape is this thin twist, about 2-inches long. Such shape was perfect for catching all the pesto, with a toss of while pine nuts, gaeta olives and fagiolini (aka. string beans ;).

Phyllis had the Grilled Hanger Steak ($22) with crushed potatoes, escarole and balsamic onions. I nabbed a piece of her steak, done medium-rare, and it was spot on if not a touch too salty.

For dessert we shared the La Fantasia di Fragola. At the base we start with fior di latte gelato, followed by sbrisolona and strawberry-prosecco sorbetto. Sbrisolona, a dense and nutty cake/cookie...more like pound cake meets shortbread...doesn't often appear on dessert menus in the city, though it really should. Here the sbrisolona was cut into tiny bite-sized cubes and tucked around the sides of the gelato cup (you can see one piece on the left side). Crushed sheets of white balsamic meringue everywhere. Loved it! The dessert was $9, which is actually cheaper than most of the copettas at Otto, and just as delicious. Speaking of which...Otto recently raised the price of the olive oil copetta to $9! Can you believe that??! Maannn.
