One Small World
When Zubair and I first started dating earlier this year, he told me of his hobbies, and I told him of mine. That's how we started on the subject of food. He had once dated a girl who aspired to open a bakery, "she owns this blue stove inherited from her grandma," he said.
Time flew by and we didn't speak of the potential bakery again. Well doesn't everyone want to open a bakery, I thought.
Last week, the very beginning of fall, I pulled up information on a bakery I was curious to visit. It was a Sunday evening, and I left the Tasting Table, and Greenpoint Gazette pages opened on the computer while I hopped in the shower.
When I stepped back into the living room, Zubair inquired, "how do you know about this bakery?"
"The Blue Stove? Oh, I just heard about it. Want to come check it out with me?"
"Remember?"
"What?"
"Remember when I told you about that girl I dated? The one who wanted to open a bakery?"
I jogged my memory seven months back...bakery...girl...THE BLUE STOVE.
"OH!"
"Yeah!"
"Whoa, so that's the bakery??"
"I guess so!"
"Wow. She opened it! That's incredible!"
"Yeah! That is pretty amazing."
Goes to show you just how small this city is.
I was lucky enough to meet Rachel McBride, owner of The Blue Stove, when I stopped by last week. Her bakery is HUGE. And just a five minute ride on the L Train from my apartment. It's "huge" as in one could linger there all afternoon with a cup of coffee and a slice of Rachel's signature pies...and not feel guilty for occupying space for long periods of time. Most everything I tasted, minus the crumb cake, was swell. If you're only getting one thing there, make it a pie. One of the fruit pies. The plum pie was crazy good, super tart, super fresh, and summer sweet. And the crusts, golden, with the perfect degree of flakiness. Loved the billowy key lime pie just as well - pucker tart and heavenly.

Happy Wednesday! ^_^
