Home Cooking via Pakistan ^_^

Just wanted to share with you a few shots of really really wonderful Pakistani food prepared by Zubair’s mom.

Zubair’s parents are visiting from Pakistan - and I’ve been lucky enough to join in on two meals so far. Aside from the lamb dish Zubair prepared in June, I have no experience with Pakistani food...so you can imagine how excited I am.

When I arrived at the apartment on Saturday morning, I was greeting first by a warm hug and then this SUPER DELICIOUS bowl of hot roasted eggplant. The eggplant was half mashed and half in chunks with lots of tomatoes blended in. It reminds me of this Vietnamese eggplant dish my mom makes - only her eggplant is completely mashed and then fried with garlic and nuoc nam.

Our second dish consisted of seasoned and boiled chickpeas with sliced beef, onions, and tomatoes. I love effortless meat and the beef was just that - that of the tender, fall-apart glory. Tomatoes, lemon, and onions, as I later learned, is a key player in Pakistani dishes.

Both dishes were accompanied by raita (whole yoghurt mixed with chopped mint and peppers)...

...and fried pita bread. My natural instincts craved rice as soon as I saw that first eggplant dish, but once I ripped into a super hot and crisp pita round, all was forgotten ^_^
On Sunday, the focus of lunch was a dish called "haleem."

It's a lot like jook/porridge made from a mix of grains in a thick curry based broth with lots of shredded chicken, raw green peppers, and hard boiled eggs. And spicy! Super spicy :D

A side of sliced onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lemon. To be mixed with the haleem, or eaten plain on the side.
And dessert? A refreshing, chilled bowl of fruit chatt - apples, grapes, and peaches ^_^
