GO by AirTran Airways

If you're flying AirTran Airways this month, take a peek at Page 18 of Go, their in-flight magazine. Natalie Portman is on the cover of this January 2011 issue, and I'm featured in the "blog feed" section with Five Picks for NYC Hot Chocolate. Hope you enjoy!

Chocolate Fix!

La Maison du Chocolate - "The signature Caracas hot chocolate here is a sublimely dark and sophisticated number, silky with bold flavors, and has the most elegant presentation in town."

City Bakery - This decadently creamy classic is superbly thick with a consistency near pudding. Don't forget to top off your cup with a plush homemade marshmallow."

Jacques Torres - You can't go wrong with the Wicked hot cocoa, infused with ancho and chipotle chili peppers, cinnamon and allspice."

Otto - "Hazelnut-steeped milk is the foundation for the gianduja calda, a thick drink made with a duo of milk chocolates. It comes with buttery shortbread, perfectly suited for dunking."

Tarallucci E Vino - "This excellent everyday hot chocolate is not too thick or too thing. For the purist, it comes completely unsweetened and explodes with pure, heady dark chocolate."

P.S.
Wanted to share this photo that Robyn posted on Flickr. There's a definite slope to the shot that makes it look like we're sinking, but I love it anyways. It was taken in the lounge of Blue Hill at Stone Barns prior to lunch. Right to left: Greg, Robyn, Diana and myself. View the whole set, Robyn's photos are pretty awesome.

Interview with Barney's

I recently did an interview with Kate Sung of Barney's, and it was just posted it on B-Sides, the Barney's blog. The theme for their 2010 holiday display windows is "Have a Foodie Holiday," so you can understand how this is appropriate ;)

Check out the interview here, or just scroll down. Hope everyone is having a great week! Went to Pioneer Saloon with Farida and Lisa for lunch today, then to Coffee or Tea? for afternoon snack (papaya milk!). My parents had a party at home this evening...catering from Pho 777 and Fook Yuen, cleaning up the kitchen now. Munching on the leftovers. What I'd give to extend this Hawai'i vacation...though am superduper excited to spend both Christmas and New Years in NYC for the first time.

NYC: Cooking Channel: Doughnuts at The Donut Pub

Hope everyone is having a good Saturday!

If you have time tomorrow night (12/12), tune into the Cooking Channel at 11pm EST for the Donuts episode of United Tastes of America. I appear in a short bit with Jeffrey Saad. We filmed at the Donut Pub on 14th Street earlier this summer, so it's exciting to see this on television! I'm a big fan of their mini doughnuts, which I blogged about on Serious Eats...

Above is the Cinnamon-Sugar and the Powdered Sugar mini, they also put out a Red Velvet mini earlier this year and those are amazing. It puts any red velvet layer cake or cupcake to shame. A good deal too - three mini-doughnuts for $1.25. I was lucky enough to meet the owner, his wife, and their three daughters while filming this episode. Genuinely sweet people. The Donut Pub has been around since 1964, opened 24/7...I've been here at 7am, 7pm, midnight and all other odd hours of the day. They also bake big muffins but I have yet to try those...perhaps the next visit.

Super thanks to Christine for telling me about it! The episode first aired last Tuesday and I didn't even know about it. They'll be airing the show a few more times in January as well if you miss the one tomorrow.

Am off to Hawai'i in just one day!

Max Ferguson: Remember Spring 2009?

Max Ferguson and I at his Gallery Henoch exhibition opening

A chance encounter at an East Village café led to this.

And tonight - a year and a half later, was the opening reception for Max Ferguson's Urban Intimacy, his first solo exhibition in half a decade. Check out The Daily News article on Max and his approach to painting.

I went to the opening at Gallery Henoch with Monsieur P this evening, and it was so wonderful and strange to see myself in a painting! The painting - oil on panel, is titled "Woman in Café."

And really, that's what I do best: newspaper, coffee, and cake in a café on any given afternoon ;)

Doughnuts!

Last week, I met with Suzanne Ma, reporter for the Associated Press.

The subject? DOUGHNUTS.

Suzanne had found me via the NYC Doughnut article I wrote for Serious Eats. We met in the afternoon, at the Herald Square location of one of new twelve Tim Horton's shops to hit the city.

The article, published on Yahoo news, and some other places, is titled "Canadian doughnut chain enters NYC doughnut wars." I'm just briefly mentioned in two paragraphs but there's a photo of me licking away crumbs, holding a bitten iced-chocolate cake doughnut in my right hand, and a chocolate-covered chocolate cake doughnut in my other hand.

TWO KINDS OF CHOCOLATE CAKE DOUGHNUTS.

...you can never have too many...heheh

I'd tell you more about how we sampled twelve doughnuts (including this crazy looking blueberry number) on a Wednesday afternoon, but Suzanne's behind the scenes post on our meeting at, "Fried dough, what’s not to like?” –the story behind the story…" is much more awesome than what I could write...make sure to read it! ^_^

Strangely enough, eating all those doughnuts made me crave malassadas from the Punahou Carnival. Sigh, you can never win ;)

Happy Sunday!

In the NY Times Today...Pizza

The New York Times ran a piece on "The New Generation of Pizzerias" in the city today, and used a few of my photos from Veloce Pizzeria...see here! I thought that was pretty cool, heehee.

Happy Wednesday!

Conde Nast Traveler

Super duper thanks to Joyce, who's comment in the last post alerted me of some pretty neat news...I'm in this month's issue of Conde Nast Traveler! Wheee! hehe ^_^

As soon as I saw the comment around 1am last night, Zubair and I ran to the 24 hour magazine shop next to L'arte del Gelato on Bleecker & 7th Avenue to pick up an issue. So exciting!

Just a tiny blurb on page 104, but I thought it was pretty cool ^_^ Makes me miss Thang's avocado smoothies and lunches at Andy's back home...hopefully I'll get to make a trip back to Hawai'i later this year.

Happy Sunday :)

Radio!! ^_^

I'll be on WNYC FM 93.9 tomorrow (Monday) morning at 11:55am on the Brian Lehrer Show. Listen in if you can! The subject? Brown bagging lunch ideas - see/listen here :) Spam musubis will be discussed for sure, heehee.

Hope you're having an awesome weekend!
