Little Snacks

I met up with Jess in the late afternoon. We are both lucky that our work hours allow us to have meals at odd times. Times when most restaurants are empty and free of crowds. First on the agenda, a little snack at Baohaus on Rivington Street.

Pork buns, pork buns! The NYT will tell you more about these.

"Chairman Bao - "Braised slow and low using Niman Ranch Pork Belly. Served with crushed peanuts, cilantro, haus relish, and Taiwanese red sugar.""

My grandma would kill me if she knew I was paying $4 apiece.

[Minimum wage when I was working the bakery counter at Saint Germain in Honolulu not too many years ago was $6.75!]

Post-bao, we stopped at one my favourite clothing shops on Ludlow and picked up pretty black dresses, sheer, short, long sleeves. Spring to come soon!
And then, another little snack at The Meatball Shop. A tidy trio of beef meatballs and spicy tomato sauce. Focaccia on the side. I grew up with meatballs on rice, tomato sauce and all :)
Dessert? Mint ice cream (with fresh mint leaves) sandwiched between two brownie cookies. Impossible to consume neatly in actual sandwich format. Ice cream is on the airy side. Regardless. Delicious. But must be deconstructed for any potential of non-messy consumption.

Look at the rain come down today - absolutely crazy. There's wind. And some thunder. This is my favourite type of weather. Etta James. Waking up late. Olive oil and a baguette. One Big Island shortbread cookie, chocolate-dipped, from Shann. And lots of hot tea.
It's a day to reorganize the apartment! Yes, those are calcium gummy bears on the bottom right :) The hat collection is getting out of control. A-coffee-a-day, a-hat-a-week, is quickly turning into my personal motto.
This is the rabbit beret from Barbara Feinman. Purchased on a whim last weekend. A funny hat, so buttery soft. It is completely shapeless and if you don't pay close attention to how you wear it, the hat can look very odd! Shower cap and mushroom are a few words that come to mind. I have nothing against fur, each to their own.
Only one reason to venture out in this weather: coffee.
Shannon and I took the L out to Brooklyn. Three blocks off the Bedford Street stop to the newly opened Blue Bottle Coffee. Lattes and Hot Chocolate. They ran out chocolate financiers (by Patisserie Colson), that was the only sad part.
Look at the space, I'd love to turn this into an apartment. All this open space! Blue Bottle's set of Japanese slow-drip coffee makers can stay too ;)
From the NYT: "But then there are the show-stoppers — five Japanese slow-drippers, each three feet tall, that look like a Victorian aristocrat’s science experiment. The wood and brass frames support stacked glass globes and adjustable nozzles that mete out liquid at 88 drops per minute."
