Wednesday Dinner: Xie Xie with Jess
Jess and I had dinner over at Xie Xie in Hells Kitchen earlier tonight. Our meal was comped by the very charming Angelo Sosa who put together a taste for us. That said, I'd gladly return on my own dime...especially for Fish Chaca La Vong and the "1000 Year Old" Ice Cream Sandwich.
Our meal started with the Fish Chaca La Vong, a sandwich inspired by the one and the only dish served at Cha Ca La Vong, the oldest restaurant in Vietnam. The sandwich came complete with onion jam, Sriracha mayonnaise, and dill (lots of it! :)...
...and then we moved onto a sandwich of shredded braised chicken, smoked egg salad, and cilantro...
...and finally, Vietnamese bbq beef, with basil mayonnaise, and carrot kimchee on brioche. Each sandwich shown is half an order, and one full order makes for a well portioned meal (saving enough room for dessert of course ;)
There are two desserts on the menu. First, the Xie Xie Fortune Cookie, extra-crisp, extra-big with a whipped yuzu dipping cream.
And then there was "1000 Year Old" Ice Cream Sandwich, my favourite bite of the night. The sandwich is play on the preserved duck egg (also known as the "century egg"), and a mighty clever one at that. Shells of crunchy cocoa nib wafers and caramel ice cream. Slice in half to reveal salted black caramel, thick and lush, slowly dripping out...it's a gorgeous sight ^_^
