Recently, I mentioned that I'd share photos from a kaiseki tasting menu I had at Kyo Ya earlier this summer. A massive thank you to Travis for inviting me out to this meal. It was truly exquisite and one of my most memorable dinners of the year. The tasting, which included 11 courses, took just over four hours, though time seriously flew by so quickly, one amazing dish presented after another, a perfect rhythm, flow. My favourite of all the dishes was the most simple, a sashimi platter (pictured at top) served on ice, individually portioned and perfect in every way. And that tower of fresh uni tongues on the left, each tongue lightly napped over the other! Can you imagine? Heaven indeed!
Photos, in order of the kaiseki, below.

Hojicha Ice Cream (this was a "bonus" sweet course sent out after I had mentioned how much I loved their Hojicha Ice Cream on my last visit...I Sugar Rush'ed it on Serious Eats earlier this year...the ice cream alone is worth a visit to Kyo Ya whether or not you're coming for the Kaiseki :)

Off to Boston + Weekly Wrap Up!
Am heading off to Boston today!!! Just wanted to thank everyone for all the incredibly helpful restaurant recommendations via email and comments. It's bound to be a delicious trip :)
Below, a photo wrap-up of odds and ends from the past week.
1. Sunday lunch to-go from the new Upper East Side location of Shake Shack. I went with Phyllis who was delighted by the fact that she could go straight to the C-line if she had her baby + stroller with her...aka no wait during prime eating hours! One Shack Burger and Fries to start the day. Then it was off to Open Houses and showing appointments till the evening.
2. Saturday night dinner with Monsieur P at Scarpetta. We came at 10pm, no wait for two bar seats. Their excellent bread basket arrived quickly, with a trio of accompaniments: mascarpone-butter, an anchovy-kissed eggplant caponata , and citrus-herb olive oil. I dove for the still warm stromboli first, olive oil-brushed with layers of salami, basil, melting smoked mozzarella, and cherry tomatoes.
We shared an appetizer of Raw Yellowtail with olio di zenzero and flaked sea salt, and two pastas. First their oh-so popular and insanely expensive Spaghetti with Tomato and Basil ($24!!) and the Black Tagliolini with Mixed Seafood, Sea Urchin & Minted Bread Crumbs ($26). The dishes were fantastic but not worth the price tag...not even close. You gotta read this Serious Eats post for more information on the pasta. I'm glad I tried it, but won't return for a second visit.
The service at the bar was terrible. We had a bartender/waiter hovering over us the entire meal, and he tried to swipe away dishes before we were even close to finishing...multiple times! On one instance I still had my pasta fork in hand and he slipped the plate out from under me. I had to ask for it back...at least five bites left in there! I was close to grabbing his hand and saying PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH MY PLATE. And to top it off, the bar was only half full. Incredibly annoying. Drinks and dinner was about $150 and took less than an hour.
We squeezed dessert in that hour too. A Rhubarb Cake with Buttermilk Ice Cream and Muscat Jelly. And then a plate of mignardises with the check. Service can certainly ruin a dinner. In this case it did.
3. Baguette slices, pan-fried, buttered and covered in Grana Padano. The PR people for Grana Padano recently sent me a pound of the Italian cheese, and I've been incorporating the cheese into everything this past week! Fresh pesto with fusilli, scrambled eggs, and heirloom tomatoes just to mention a few.
4. Chiangmai Noodles in Curry Sauce...my new favourite menu item from Galanga in the West Village. Monsieur P always gets the Drunken Noodles. Our orders are pretty straightforward, and we come here on nights we crave simple and reliable, no surprises only satisfaction.
5. I've been cooking dinner fairly "often" (two times a week). I usually get back to the apartment before Monsieur P, but on the nights I return later and need a little prep help, I set everything up neatly with simple notes. The photo above is for local-style Chicken Long Rice, a Hawaiian staple I grew up with in Hawai'i. I remember when the school cafeteria would have it for lunch, it was seriously the best thing ever and I would always go back for seconds and thirds!! The recipe is simple:
1 package long rice (3 bundles)
12 dried shitake mushrooms
16 ounces chicken broth
1 knob ginger, peeled and minced
1 pound chicken thighs, boiled and shredded
soy sauce, to taste
sesame oil, to taste
green onions, chopped
First, soak the shitake mushrooms and long rice (in separate bowls!) of warm water to soften, about 30 minutes. Drain the noodles, rinse, and cut in half with scissors. Drain the shitake mushrooms and slice thinly. Put the shitake mushrooms, chicken broth, minced ginger and shredded chicken in a deep saucepan. Bring to a boil and add the soften long rice. Add a splash of soy sauce, and sesame oil. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until you get a consistency in which the noodles are "wet" but not soupy. Add the chopped green onions and...
...serve! Usually I have a side dish with this - a pound of crispy roast pork from Chinatown or pork lau lau. Finish with a square of haupia for dessert, and ahhh, bliss indeed!

NYC: Lunch: Eleven Madison Park
Beet Marshmallows and Foie Gras & Jelly on Black Pepper Crackers
Last week, Shann, Smo, Darien and I met for lunch at Eleven Madison Park. It was the first time the four of us got together for a "fancy" meal during the day. The occasion? To celebrate moving into new apartments! I'm still in the East Village, three blocks south from the previous apartment, so the move process was thankfully not too big of a production ;)
Our usual standby restaurant when dining together is Grand Sichuan on St Marks. It has never failed us and everyone leaves stuffed and happy. Soup dumplings, cumin beef, beef chow funn, wontons in hot oil, and cucumbers with scallion sauce. Family-style dining, easy, and most importantly, delicious!
Gougeres
But this time we decided to do something nicer. And what's nicer than lunch at Eleven Madison Park? Luckily we made it just before the menu changes. They're doing away with the $28 for 2-course lunch and replacing it with $56 for 3-course and $95 for an 8-course tasting lunch. Cheee, talk about a price hike...
French Baguette and Olive Ficelle
I love the $28 for two-course deal and have posted about it in the past here. I don't think I will be returning for the $56 lunch...but we'll see about that. Maybe I'll take the money "saved" from not doing EMP lunches, and go to Blue Hill at Stone Barns or Per Se, two places that have been on my mental list for a long time.
Fregola Sarda
Or maybe I'll try to squeeze in another $28 lunch before the price hike takes place! On to lunch! The meal began with Beet Marshmallows and Foie Gras & Jelly on Black Pepper Crackers (pictured at top). The beet marshmallow left this tangy sort of after taste I couldn't quite agree with, but it was texturally fantastic (miles better than the famed Jean George marshmallows). Then there were warm Gougeres and of course their French Baguette and Olive Ficelle.
Seared Diver Scallop
Shann started off with a single Seared Diver Scallop with Succotash, Watercress and Red Pepper Nage while Darien had the Fregola Sarda with Octopus, Chickpeas and Fennel. Smo and I both went with the...
Tagliolini with Alaskan King Crab
...Tagliolini with Alaskan King Crab, Black Pepper and Lemon. The pasta dishes at EMP are always just perfect like that, and this was no different. A kiss of dill in the bright, buttery pasta, a delicate tangle of tagliolini. So simply composed. The last time I had the tagliolini was when they did it in a carbonara with guanciale. I always find myself enjoying the appetizer dishes significantly more than then mains.
Herb Roasted Colorado Lamb
And what were the mains? The St. Canut Farm Cochon de Lait with Bing Cheries, Sweet Onion and Mustard for myself. Shann, Smo and Darien all got the Herb Roasted Colorado Lamb with Eggplant, Cumin and Yogurt. I was so focused on getting a photo of Shann's lamb that I completely forgot to take a photo of my own dish! Man...that's when you know you're losing it! ;) Has anyone had the whole roast chicken for two here? That is the one dish I really would like to try, but on all visits to EMP, my offers of going in on the whole chicken has been turned down. Everyone wants something more unusual, turning their nose up at just roast chicken. Sigh, one day, one day...
Kouign Amann
For dessert we picked Kouign Amann (additional $12), the ever buttery Breton cake from the dessert trolley. They cut an extra big slice knowing that we were sharing between four. One person would seriously have a heart attack trying to finish that slice on their own! On the side: sour cherry jam and creme fraiche.
Kouign Amann, another shot!
Layers upon layers of golden buttery sweet, the exterior caramelized to a crisp. It got me all excited for our upcoming vacation to Brittany, where hopefully I'll start every morning with a wedge of kouign amann.

Nibbles and Clippings...
...from the past week. Hope all has been well! I've been busy wrapping up work here before seeing my family in Boston next week. Then back in NYC for one week, and then off to France for two! Whew.
Saturday night at Ben and Sanu's. Ben prepared a killer shrimp salad which we followed up with roasted lamb (lots of garlic and rosemary), creamed spinach, and cheesy potato gratin - extra crisp top! There was plenty of prosecco and wine as always (hooray!)...
...and for dessert? A classic pear tart for six from Patisserie Claude.
We couldn't help but order a duo of eclairs while we were there. One coffee for Monsieur P and...
...one chocolate for myself. Innards!
Earlier that day I met up with Greg to check out apartments. We celebrated his find with iced milk tea boba at Saint's Alp...seriously the best boba in the city.
In the afternoon Monsieur P and I went shopping after a roasted mushroom and goat cheese omelette at Zampa in the West Village. The nicely charred rosemary fried potatoes that accompanied this dish was my favourite part.
Also shared a fresh mozzarella salad. Basil, Tomatoes, Olive Oil and Sea Salt. Light and summery. Dishes at Zampa are best understood as simple food - nothing spectacular, but easy comfort.
Of course I undid all that goodness with a coffee milkshake from Ronnybrook Dairy inside the Chelsea Market. Thick, glorious, and all things wonderful.
Fell in love with these Orchids from MK Orchid Farm at the Greenmarket on a Monday morning. They were $25 - it was my first time buying orchids in the city - am not sure if these are the going rate or if I paid too much. Nonetheless, they make me very happy. Keep them on my desk at Monsieur P's, such a cheerful sight.
Above is a photo from a weeknight dinner. From left to right. Deviled Eggs. Blistered Shishito Peppers with Fleur de Sel. A Panzanella Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes, Avocado and Grana Padano.
There was a whole year in my life when I ate out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every. Single. Meal. But now I've trying to cook more and eat out less. Cooking I have to say, is more fun when there's two. I cook. We eat. Monsieur P cleans. We have it worked out nicely. I do the grocery/produce shopping - I only like grocery shopping alone. Other people drive me crazy and I drive others crazy because I am SO SLOW at grocery shopping. I like to comb through every farmer's offering at the Greenmarket and through every aisle at Whole Foods even if I know I'm not going to buy anything from that aisle or from that farmer. You learn something new every trip!
A Greek feast for 12 at Stamatis Restaurant in Queens, followed by a late night at the beer garden. I've heard so much about this massive beer garden since the first month I've moved to NYC...can you believe it's taken me three years to get there?! At Stamiatis, the octopus was the best plate of the night, thought the okra and lamb chops were excellent as well.
Went to the Brooklyn 38 party with Jess last night, and finished with dinner at Ignazio's Pizzeria in Dumbo. You know, I could eat pizza for every meal of my life. Fresh Mozzarella, Italian Plum Tomatoes, Pecorino Romano, Basil, Oregano and Olive Oil. We wiped out a large. I went home and Monsieur P had a glass of port waiting for me. Life is good...for this week at least ;)
